F. G. Marshall Ltd is a company based in the UK. We have been established since 1932, and specialise in hand-crafted books (including remembrance books, book binding, re-binding and restoration), calligraphy and artwork, stone cutting and cabinet making. We undertake work for a great variety of clients, including business organisations, charities and churches, as well as producing quality work for individuals and special events around the world.

Books of Remembrance

F.G.Marshall supplied the very first book of remembrance to Woking Crematorium in 1938. Since then, hundreds of crematoria, at home and over seas, have adopted our pioneering concept.

The Books

Books of Remembrance for Crematoria and larger Churches are hand-made throughout, using proven traditional book binding techniques. They are constructed using archival quality materials to provide a binding that will last for many centuries. The most popular size for these volumes is 20" x 15", 510mm x 380mm (approximate closed dimensions). The Book can be made in two half-yearly, three four-monthly or four quarterly volumes. Crematoria Books are designed with two pages allocated to each day of the year, with the Volume displayed open at the actual day, so that the memorial entries may be seen by the public on each anniversary. The covers can be finished in vellum or leather covers, and decoration can be as simple or ornate as you wish. 24 carat gold leaf tooling, hand-painted emblems or Borough coat of arms, and semi-precious stones may be incorporated to provide an original and completely individual design. The pages are made from either sheepskin parchment or archival quality acid-free paper and are edge-gilded with 24 carat gold. Two pages are allocated to each day of the year with date titling by hand in a colour to correspond with the memorial entries. Each page is ruled with two columns and has the capacity for approximately 50 two-line memorial entries.

Memorial Entries

The memorial entries are carefully executed by highly skilled artists, and inscribed with the chosen wording hand-penned, usually in black with either red or blue ink. The minimum entry is of two lines with the top line consisting of the name only. With entries of five or more lines, space is available to enhance the memorial by the inclusion of a miniature work of art, such as a floral emblem, animals and birds, badges of societies and organisations, regimental badges, crests and coats of arms. The exceptional quality and appearance of these volumes can be viewed by the public to best effect when displayed in a suitable glass-topped cabinet, available to order from ourselves.
